The History of the Etiwanda Preserve

The North Etiwanda Preserve in Rancho Cucamonga is more than just a scenic hiking spot—it’s a vital piece of the region’s history and conservation efforts.

Early History and the Founding of Etiwanda

The area was originally home to Native American tribes before Canadian brothers George and William Chaffey purchased land in 1881. They established Southern California’s first mutual water company, making Etiwanda a model for irrigation. The town also saw the region’s first long-distance telephone call in 1882 and early use of electric lighting.

Growth and Conservation

In 1977, Etiwanda merged with Alta Loma and Cucamonga to form Rancho Cucamonga. As development expanded, conservation efforts took shape. In 1998, the North Etiwanda Preserve was created to protect native species and mitigate the impact of the 210 Freeway. Today, it spans 1,200+ acres, preserving the Riversidean Alluvial Fan Sage Scrub ecosystem and wildlife like the Coastal California Gnatcatcher.

A Lasting Legacy

Popular trails, including the hike to Etiwanda Falls, make the preserve a favorite among visitors. More than just a natural retreat, it reflects the region’s dedication to balancing growth with environmental preservation, ensuring future generations can enjoy its beauty.
