Rancho Cucamonga’s Winemaking Legacy
In the early 1900s, Rancho Cucamonga’s Cucamonga Valley was a global winemaking powerhouse. Spanning over 20,000 acres, it was one of the largest wine-growing regions in the world, rivaling today’s most renowned wine areas. At its peak, vineyards stretched along the San Gabriel Mountains, producing wine that defined the era. However, by the mid-20th century, suburban development and changing consumer tastes pushed the valley into obscurity, leaving behind just a fraction of its original vineyards.
Today, a revival is underway, led by winemakers who value the valley’s historic vines and unique terroir. These vineyards, many planted over a century ago by Italian immigrants, include own-rooted vines that survived the phylloxera pest due to the region’s sandy-loam soil and dry conditions. Organic farming has thrived here for decades, aligning with the philosophies of modern vintners drawn to Cucamonga’s resilience and legacy.
At the heart of this renaissance is Joseph Filippi Winery and Vineyards, which has been growing grapes since 1922. Now operated by the fifth generation of the Filippi family, the winery continues to honor Cucamonga’s winemaking traditions while embracing innovation. The battle against encroaching development continues, but Joseph Filippi Winery and others remain steadfast in preserving Rancho Cucamonga’s winemaking heritage.
