How Did Rancho Cucamonga Get Its Name?

If you’ve ever told someone you live in Rancho Cucamonga, you’ve likely been met with a puzzled look, a chuckle, or even the occasional, "Is that a real place?" While the name might sound unusual to some, it carries a rich history that connects us to the land’s earliest inhabitants.

"Rancho Cucamonga" comes from the Tongva village of Kukamogna, which means "Place of the Sand." Long before Spanish explorers arrived in 1769, the Tongva people called this region home, thriving for thousands of years. The Spanish expeditions marked the first outside contact with the area, but the name "Cucamonga" endures as a reminder of the land’s Indigenous heritage.
